Do You Face Theft Or Burglary Charges?
Under Michigan law, theft is referred to as “larceny,” and refers to unlawfully taking property that belongs to someone else. The penalty for conviction of a larceny depends on the value of what is stolen and whether a weapon was used in committing theft.
Stealing property that has a value of less than $200 is known as “petty larceny,” but don’t be fooled by the term. There is nothing “petty” about this or any larceny charge. The penalty for petty larceny may include up to 93 days in jail and a fine up to $500 or three times the value of the stolen property, whichever is greater.
Stealing property that has a value of more than $200 but less than $1,000 is also a misdemeanor. The penalty is up to one year in jail and a fine of $2,000 or three times the value of the stolen property, whichever is greater.
Stealing property with a value of $1,000 or more but less than $20,000 is felony theft. It is also felony theft if the property stolen is a motor vehicle, trailer or a certain motor vehicle part. Felony theft is punishable by up to five years in jail and a fine up to $10,000 or three times the value of the stolen property.
